The Apprentice SecretANGEL

The Apprentice SecretANGEL

What inspired you the most about becoming a SecretANGELS apprentice and why did you think it was the best choice for you?

I am studying Health and Social Care at College and decided to become an SecretANGELS Apprentice because I knew it would help me, both with my current studies and future career. I love helping people to experience and enjoy new things. Seeing people happy, makes me happy and SecretANGELS seemed like the perfect opportunity.

Why did you choose to study Health and Social Care?

I wanted to work in an industry where I could help young children with learning disabilities to excel and reach their potential. Studying Health and Social Care will help me to build a solid foundation of knowledge on which to develop my career. Also being able to work with so many people from different backgrounds within SecretANGELS, has confirmed that this is an enjoyable and valuable experience.

What do you love most about your role of a SecretANGELS Apprentice?

I am so grateful for this opportunity and I’m really happy to be trusted enough to just get on with the work. I’m not rushed, but I know I am working to a deadline. I’m a planner, so I like to organise the things that I do. Being a SecretANGELS apprentice there is a lot of administration, so being organised has definitely been an advantage for me.

Like I said before I love seeing people happy, so working with people from so many different backgrounds and having the opportunity to make at least one-person smile, gives me a huge sense of fulfilment.

How did you become a SecretANGELS apprentice?

I had been speaking with my mum about getting into Health and Social care and studying it at college, when my mum (who is actually a SecretANGEL already) suggested that I contact the founder to see if there was anything I could do to help out and gain experience. When I did, she was amazing and so helpful. The process was quick and simple. I am actually the 1st ever SecretANGELS Apprentice.

What is your SecretANGELS role?

Currently my role is mostly admin based. Organising files and helping with logs. I work with the accountants to organise the money raised from fundraisers, which contributes towards the costs for activities and trips for our clients. I also help with the social media, which is very interesting and make sure there are pictures of the activities, so no moment is missed.

I am starting to help with the workshops too, as I really enjoy spending time with the clients and PA’s. We have different activities every week and seeing the clients enjoy themselves is always fun. I would say that is my favorite part.

What activities / workshops do you help with?

I help with the Money Skills Workshop. Some of the clients do not understand the concept of money. For example: how to count the right amount to pay for their items or to check that they have received the right change, this makes them vulnerable. Sadly, people can take advantage of this. This is why SecretANGELS creates workshops like ‘Money Skills’, to help clients develop skills they can use in their everyday life, so they can be more independent.

How would this experience link to the course you are studying at college?

The experience I get when working at SecretANGELS helps me grasp a greater understanding of certain scenarios. Having hands on experience is very beneficial, we can’t solely learn from a text-book, especially in the field I want to go into. I have really benefited from this. In my exams at college, we get asked about different scenarios, having 1st hand experience will definitely help me answer those questions.

What skills have you developed whilst being a SecretANGELS Apprentice?

Communication skills for sure! I was very reserved and shy before SecretANGELS. I always kept to myself. Being around people almost every day, for the majority of the day, who also may have difficulty communicating with you, has shown me how to adapt and communicate accordingly. Teamwork is everything. Most of the workshops are in groups, so you need to be able to listen to other people’s ideas and work as a team.

What is your favorite memory of SecretANGELS?

My first day, I just felt so welcome. The 1st day is normally the scariest day for any job, however, I felt so welcome and comfortable around everyone. They made my day!

Coronavirus Update

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE

23rd March 2020

Following the Prime Minister’s announcement tonight…

As I’m sure you have seen on the news over the last few days a large amount of people are not following Government guidance and recommendations regarding social distancing and are not staying at home except for essential activities increasing the risk to us all. Unfortunately we have seen this behaviour locally within the shopping centres, towns and countryside.

For the safety of your loved ones and for that of our staff we feel we must reduce their exposure to this virus as much as possible. We have gained further advice and following this have made the decision to stop all non essential support activities until further notice.

Essential support will include:
Shopping and collecting medications for those clients who
• Do not have family members to support them
• Are within the high risk category
• Those already in self isolation
• Those who’s family members do not live locally

Where possible we ask for you to complete online shopping for them via the click & collect option which our staff will then pick up and deliver.
With medication collection & delivery please ensure we have the following information to enable staff to contact the pharmacy prior to confirm items are ready:
•Pharmacy contact number
•Date of birth or NHS number
•Full address & postcode

I appreciate it is disappointing for your loved ones to not be receiving the support with social activities they are used too and have no doubt this will cause them some upset, however with the complete lockdown being implemented by the government this evening we feel this is the only course of action.

Should your family member fall into the above categories please email Kerryann, Angela or myself to arrange the essential support.

Stay safe & best wishes,
Kerryann, Misty & Angela

Coronavirus Announcement

CORONAVIRUS PREPARATIONS ANNOUNCEMENT

18th March 2020

I’m sure that by now you are all well aware of the current situation with Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the effect this is having on the health and social care sector.

This is an announcement of measures we will be putting into place over the coming weeks and months to ensure the safety of the people we support and our employees so that you have a clear idea of what to expect and hopefully provide assurance that we are doing everything we possibly can to minimise the impact.

Current Status

As it stands, as of 18/03/2020 at 17:00 we have no PA’s who have self-isolated and no confirmed Coronavirus cases.  There is currently low disruption to service delivery, however, if this changes we will need to measure the impact on the organisation and decide on measures we can put in place to limit that disruption.

Staffing

Although we aren’t able to predict (with complete accuracy) how staffing will be affected overall, we are monitoring staff levels closely and have in place contingency plans to ensure the level of service currently offered is maintained.

Office Closure

Currently, we are keeping Head Office staffed for its usual hours of 10 – 4 Mon – Fri.

Kerryann will also network with other providers and commissioning services and will be directly contactable.

Roles & Responsibilities

We will endeavour to provide a full and complete service for as long as possible. Utilising available technology, including remote working services wherever this is appropriate. However due to the potential impact of Coronavirus, we have made the decision for us to primarily focus on priority tasks which will include:

  • Ensuring food & essential item deliveries reach the people we support
  • Ensuring medication stocks are available for the people we support
  • Finding remote cover and physical cover for absence
  • Providing on-call/remote assistance in emergency situations
  • Communicating updates to staff, service users and family
  • Recruitment
  • Supporting staff and monitoring infection control efforts

Remaining resources will be utilised for the following systems (this list is not exhaustive and will include all ‘non-essential tasks’):

  • Annual leave booking
  • Support Plan & Risk Assessment updates
  • Team Meetings
  • General queries
  • Complaints
  • Training (although online training should be completed)
  • Management checks
  • Spot Checks

We advise that all of the people we support, and our employees adhere to social distancing measures:

  1. Avoid contact with someone who is displaying symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19). These symptoms include high temperature and/or new and continuous dry cough
  2. Avoid non-essential use of public transport, varying travel times to avoid rush hour, when possible
  3. Avoid large gatherings, and gatherings in smaller public spaces such as pubs, cinemas, restaurants, theatres, bars, clubs
  4. Avoid gatherings with friends and family. Keep in touch using remote technology such as phone, internet, and social media
  5. Use telephone or online services to contact your GP or other essential services

Conclusion

We would like to thank you all for your continued support during this uncertain and unprecedented time.

We have a huge amount of gratitude and respect for PA’s and family members who have let us know that they will do everything they possibly can to limit disruption to the service in the event this situation escalates, it is truly heart-warming and humbling to be part of a team so committed to the people we support and it is this ‘togetherness’ that will be critical in our resilience over the coming weeks and months.
